mental Health & Wellness therapy in nYC

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES within a compassionate & non judgmental space.

Welcome, I’m so glad you’re here! I’m Kathryn, a licensed psychotherapist based in New York City. I work collaboratively with individuals who seem to have it all together on the surface, but struggle with overwhelming anxious and depressive thoughts and feelings. I support and empower clients in breaking cycles and healing from deep rooted traumas, stress/burnout, people pleasing, and perfectionism in addition to navigating clients through relationship concerns and life transitions. As an Asian American therapist, I enjoy working with Asian American individuals surrounding concerns that are unique to the Asian American experience, including navigating family of origin dynamics and interracial relationships.

In my practice, I strive to be trauma-informed, evidence based, anti-racist, culturally affirming and work from a relational, attachment based lens. My style and approach is to be collaborative, interactive, and empowering.

Beyond the therapy room, I am passionate about destigmatizing mental health particularly within the AAPI community. I have worked with various organizations and contributed to publications as a mental health and relationship expert.

specializations

  • Depression and anxiety can make you feel hopeless, angry, stuck, alone, isolated, and overwhelmed. Whether you are experiencing these feelings due to a recent loss, life transition, relationship issues, trauma, or have been clinically diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety, therapy can be a space for you to feel seen, heard, and to improve your anxious and depressive symptoms.

  • So much of our “junk” manifest in our relationships. Regardless of your relationship status, therapy can be a space for you to become aware of, understand, and break patterns and tendencies. Themes that I often explore with my clients are attachment styles, codependency, intimacy/connection, infidelity and relational trauma.

  • Life transitions can include moving to a different city, starting a new job/career path, starting or ending a relationship, getting engaged or married, deciding to have children, and/or dealing with loss. Whatever the transition may be, periods of transitions can trigger feelings of loneliness and isolation. I support clients going through various changes so that they can find clarity in how to move forward.

  • Burnout can be emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion; typical symptoms include feelings of helplessness, detachment, loneliness, loss of motivation, and anxiety. In my practice, I often work with high achieving individuals, self identified perfectionists and people pleasers to address core beliefs and expectations in addition to cultural and systemic beliefs and structures that enable burnout.

  • Our families are the first unit that we are a part of, creating the blueprint in how we operate in society. So many individuals unconsciously repeat the same behaviors and tendencies their parents did even if they do not want to. I support clients in identifying and then unlearning cycles and patterns from their own unique backgrounds so that they relearn healthier ways to cope and relate to others.

  • I am an EMDR trained trauma therapist with experience in complex, relational, racial, generational trauma & childhood sexual abuse. I also work with individuals who experience vicarious trauma, or compassion fatigue, in the legal field and medical services. I offer both individual and group therapy sessions for individuals and organizations.

  • Asian Americans are increasingly seeking therapy from Asian American therapists. You want a therapist that “gets you,” that understands the cultural nuances and mental health implications of the Asian American experience. As a second generation Korean American, I am passionate in working with AAPI folk in working through and navigating concerns that are unique to the AAPI experience, including family dynamics, interracial relationships, generational trauma, feelings of obligation, guilt, and overwhelm, in addition to acknowledging systemic barriers.

FAQS

  • Sessions for individual counseling are set at $225 for 50 minutes. Payments are accepted via cash, check, debit/credit card. Sliding scales may be considered based on annual income for clients experiencing financial hardship. Please reach out for more information!

  • “Out-of-network” mental health services may be covered in part or in full by your health insurance plan. Consider asking your provider these questions:

    • Do I have "out-of-network" mental health insurance benefits?

    • What is my deductible and has it been met?

    • What is my "co-insurance"?

    • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

    • What is the coverage amount per session?

    • Is approval required from my primary care doctor?

Please note that in instances where out-of-network benefits are covered, you will be responsible for payment at the time of service and your insurance will reimburse your expenses.

  • Insurance companies mandate a diagnosis, oversee your health records and may seek access to your information while in therapy. In addition to meeting a deductible, there may also be limits to the number of sessions covered per year regardless of your circumstances. You may be limited to in-network providers which can narrow your chances of finding the right fit for you. In considering these aspects in using insurance, paying out-of-pocket may be a better fit for some. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

  • I offer weekly therapy sessions, and will work with you to find a consistent time slot that works with your schedule. Meeting on a weekly basis will give us space to develop a therapeutic relationship; research has shown that the most important factor in therapy is the therapeutic relationship. Strengthening the therapeutic relationship will create a space in which you should feel comfortable being vulnerable.
